Richard was born in the United Kingdom, and grew up in Cleveland, South Carolina, and Philadelphia. He received his BA in English and History from Penn State University, and did his Masters in Fine Arts work at the University of Washington-Seattle. He matriculated at Columbia University School of Law before graduating from the University of Texas School of Law, where he served as president of the Student Bar Association and received the Hildy Cutback Award, presented by the law faculty to one graduating 3L.

Richard taught LSAT for Kaplan Test Prep for 10 years from 2005 to 2015, where he was the company's six time Teacher of the Year and the #1 ranked LSAT instructor in the United States. He has been profiled in Texas Lawyer magazine and is also the co-author of three of Amazon's bestselling LSAT prep books. He has provided LSAT teaching/tutoring and admissions consulting for nearly 4000 students, all of whom have seen an increase in their test scores.

Prior to law school, Richard was a features writer for the Tribune newspaper group. He also worked for the Washington Post Company. In his spare time, he was a contestant on both Jeopardy! and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. He has worked with Safeplace and the Texas Advocacy Project here in Austin, providing legal services for the victims of domestic violence. He is a two-time top ten finalist in the ATX Television Festival pitch contest.  He is also the proud parent of a shih tzu named Bruce Wayne.
